Have you ever seen what happens to timber exposed to heavy rain? Yes, it expands. But the real question is: Will it last long afterwards?
With over 30 years in business, we will say that these concerns are completely valid, especially when working with untreated timber. However, when timber is CCA-treated, the outcome is very different. So… should you be worried? Maybe. Maybe not…
In this blog, we’ll break it down clearly and practically, giving you peace of mind and helping you understand why CCA-treated Pine timber is designed to handle the elements, even during heavy rains.

What happens to untreated timber exposed to heavy rain?
Timber is a natural, porous material. Think of it as a dense sponge: it absorbs moisture when wet and releases it again as the environment dries.
When untreated timber is exposed to heavy rainfall, several issues can arise:
- Swelling: excess moisture causes the wood fibres to expand
- Warping: uneven drying leads to bending and twisting
- Discolouration: water stains and surface changes become visible
- Mould & mildew: moisture creates the perfect breeding ground
- Splitting & cracking: repeated wet-and-dry cycles weaken the structure
What happens next?
Over time, prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to rotting, significantly shortening the timber’s lifespan. For projects such as decking, fencing, pergolas, or garden furniture, this can mean costly repairs or even complete replacement. Yes, individual pieces can be replaced. But why waste money, time, and effort when you can do it right the first time?
So, untreated timber can be used in various applications, including construction, as long as it is NOT exposed to weather elements.
Can CCA-treated timber withstand heavy rain?
This is where things change. The ultimate goal of the CCA chemical penetrating the timber is to protect it against heavy weather exposure. Here’s how:
The process of chemical fixation permanently bonds protective agents to the wood’s internal structure. Each chemical component serves a specific role in defending the wood against the elements:
1. The Three Layers of Protection
- Copper (The Fungicide): Copper oxide is the primary agent that prevents rot. In heavy rain or high-moisture environments, fungi would normally feed on wood fibers; copper makes the timber toxic to these microorganisms, effectively “locking out” decay.
- Arsenic (The Insecticide): Arsenic pentoxide provides a secondary layer of defense, specifically targeting wood-destroying insects like termites and borers that are often attracted to moisture-softened wood.
- Chromium (The Fixing Agent): This is the “glue” of the treatment. Chromium oxide does not have preserving properties itself, but it initiates a chemical reaction that binds the copper and arsenic to the wood’s cellulose and lignin. This ensures the protective chemicals do not leach out even during heavy, sustained rain.
2. Deep Penetration via Pressure
When heavy rain hits, CCA-treated timber does not behave the same as untreated timber.
Instead of absorbing water freely, the treatment significantly slows moisture penetration, reducing the risk of:
- Rot and decay
- Fungal growth
- Insect damage
- Structural weakening
In short, the timber remains strong, stable, and usable, even in wet environments. The timber may still expand, however, when treated, this movement is controlled and predictable. Which leads to:
- Less warping
- Fewer cracks
- Better long-term performance
- A much longer lifespan outdoors
This is exactly why CCA-treated timber is the preferred choice for decks, poles, pergolas, fencing, and outdoor structures, especially in areas that experience seasonal rainfall.
Despite all this, there is still a golden rule:
While CCA-treated timber handles weather exposure a lot better than untreated timber, you should ALWAYS avoid water buildup at all times. This is a whole other matter that can be damaging to any wood.
Do it right the first time.
Replacing timber costs more than money; it costs time, effort, and disruption.
By choosing CCA-treated timber, you’re investing in durability, safety, and peace of mind. Because when the rain comes down, your timber should be the last thing you worry about.
