Poles and Timber Prices

Knowing what you are buying is important when it comes to poles and timber product prices. Poles and timber products are graded and treated according to their intended use. As a result, poles and timber prices can vary widely depending on the wood type, grade, and cut.

We want to ensure that you can make an informed decision regarding our poles and timber product prices, grades and intended uses. Therefore, we are dedicating this post to ensuring that you have all the information you need.

CCA treated poles and timber product prices vs untreated timber product prices.

Sabie poles exclusively supplies CCA-treated Eucalyptus poles. We can treat eucalyptus poles because they have a higher amount of sapwood than other hardwoods.. Therefore, the poles are more resistant to wood-destroying elements such as rot, decay, weathering, and insects. This makes them ideal for use in big construction projects such as foundation piles, support beams, etc.

Furthermore, we supply timber products that customers can purchase either CCA treated or untreated. Pine (softwood) makes up our timber products. Therefore, untreated, it is vulnerable to insect attacks and other wood destroying elements. For certain indoor applications, you can accept using untreated timber products while for outdoor applications, you need to use treated wood.

While it is more costly to purchase untreated wood, in many cases it is necessary. However, there is only a slight difference in timber prices. Here’s an example: A 38mm x 38mm x 6m CCA treated plank is only R38.00 each, while a 38mm x 38mm x 6m untreated plank is only R34.00 each.

Timber Grades Explained:

Most timber have a certain grade accredited to it. This gives you an indication of what it can be used for. These grades are determined both in-house or by the SANS regulations.

Another key point is, that these standards are internationally recognized, and will be sold as a SABS Approved product in certain cases. Now lets get into the different timber grades and what they mean:

S5 – CONSTRUCTION GRADE

S5 Timber is referred to as structural timber and conforms to the SANS-1783:2013 specifications.

These products are mainly used in the construction of roof trusses, support beams and the framework of buildings.

UTP – UTILITY GRADE

SANS 1783:2013 specifications disqualify the timber products as UTP due to knots, sizing and other variables.

This grade is usually used for various other non-structural purposes. As well as in the roofs of informal, small buildings.

BBB – BRANDERING

BBB also adheres to SANS-1783:2013 specifications. It is mainly used for roof tiles, ceiling battens and structural support for roofs.

Furthermore, we need to look at what type of wood you are buying. Is the wood rare like Oak, Cedar or Mahogany? Or is it a more common type like Pine or Eucalyptus (Gum Tree)?

Each category has it’s own pros and cons. While Pine (softwood) is perfect when you are looking for a strong yet lightweight solution like the framework for a building, Eucalyptus (hardwood) timber products are perfect for flooring and railings.

Therefore, it is important that you know which type of wood to look at for your building project.

Two broad categories when it comes to “type” of wood:

Softwood

Softwood has a lower density. Therefore, it can be more vulnerable to scratches, dents, and wear and tear over years.

Additionally, it is easy to work with, lightweight for framework of homes. Examples: Pine

Softwood Timber Flooring

Hardwood

Hardwood usually has a higher density than most softwoods. Most importantly, it is more durable and more resistant to scratches and dents.

Examples: Paniculate, Saligna

Hardwood Products

Timber Treatment

The pricing of products will depend on the aforementioned properties. You also need to consider whether or not you should treat the timber. There are various methods of treatment available:

CCA, Creosote and others which we have discussed in this post: Understanding Timber Preservation Chemicals

You can buy the timber treated or untreated depending on your needs. At Sabie Poles, we specialize in CCA Treatment. There are various treatment classes when it comes to CCA. We will briefly look at what these CCA classes mean and which treatment class you will require for your application:
