It has several natural characteristics that make it suitable for a variety of applications. Over the years, pine wood has become one of the most important forestry products in South Africa.

In this article, we will offer useful perspectives on every aspect of structural timber, beginning with timber preparation prior to construction and concluding with advice on wood finishes.

Preparation Before Working with Pine Structural Timber

Preparing for a construction project can be an exciting and overwhelming process. One of the essential steps before working with Pine Structural Timber is proper preparation. Here are a few steps to take before starting your project with Structural SA Pine Timber.

Identify the purpose of the project.

Before you begin any construction project, it is crucial to identify the purpose of the project. Knowing the intended use of the Structural SA Pine Timber will help you determine the size, shape, and design of your project. Are you building a fence, a shed, or a deck?

Each of these projects requires a different approach, and knowing your intended purpose will ensure that you purchase the correct type and amount of timber.

Here’s an example: we offer both CCA-treated and untreated timber. If you plan to use the wood indoors, where it won’t be exposed to moisture or other agents that can damage wood, there’s no need to treat it. By keeping this in mind, you can save on expenses.

However, if you intend to use the timber outdoors, such as to construct a deck, it’s crucial to purchase CCA-treated timber to ensure protection against elements like weathering, insects, and so on.

Calculate the required amount of timber.

Calculating the required amount of timber for your project is an essential step in preparing to work with Structural SA Pine Timber. Once you have determined the purpose of your project, you need to calculate the required amount of timber.

Transportation costs can become exceeding high, especially if you are transporting wood in long distances. By ensuring that you order the correct amount of timber and avoid any delays or additional costs.

Ensure that you take accurate measurements of the area that you will be working on to get an accurate estimate.

Select the right grade of Structural timber

Timber comes in different grades, and selecting the right grade for your project is essential. The grade of timber you select will affect the strength, durability, and appearance of your project.

Our structural timber is classified as S5 grade, which means that it meets the requirements of the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) standard, in compliance with SANS 10082, for both strength and quality.

This stamp of approval ensures that our timber is authorized for use in various construction projects, including timber frames and roof trusses.

We treat our structural pine with H3 Hazard class treatment which makes it more durable and suitable for aboveground use.

In addition to our structural timber, we offer a range of mouldings that are also SABS-approved, however, it is of furniture-grade quality.

This includes decking, half-log cladding, ceiling, flooring, quarter-rounds, and architraves. Our mouldings are crafted with precision and attention to detail, ensuring that they are of the highest quality possible.

Whether you’re looking for structural timber for your next construction project or high-quality mouldings for your furniture or interior design needs, we have you covered. Our products are of the highest quality, ensuring that you get the best value for your money.

Use the correct tools for use when working with structural timber.

When it comes to working with structural timber in construction, using the right tools is crucial for ensuring that your project is completed safely and efficiently. Let’s take a look at some of the best tools recommended for use when working with structural timber.

Timber tools

Circular Saw for precise cuts.

A circular saw is one of the most important tools you’ll need when working with structural timber. This powerful tool can make quick and precise cuts through even the thickest timbers.

Look for a saw with a high-quality blade that is specifically designed for cutting through wood. A saw with a carbide-tipped blade is ideal for making clean, accurate cuts.

Timber shaping

Chainsaw for large timber.

Another tool that is essential for working with structural timber is a chainsaw. This powerful tool is perfect for cutting through larger pieces of timber that a circular saw might struggle with. Look for a chainsaw with a long bar and a powerful motor to make quick work of even the thickest timbers.

Timber decking tools

Drill to install screws and bolts

A good quality drill is also essential for working with structural timber. Look for a drill that is powerful enough to drive large screws and bolts through thick pieces of wood. A cordless drill is also a great option, as it allows you to move around your work site more easily.

Timber tools

Hammer for nails.

A hammer is a basic tool that every construction worker should have in their toolkit. When working with structural timber, you’ll need a hammer that is strong enough to drive nails through thick pieces of wood. Look for a hammer with a comfortable grip that is easy to hold for extended periods of time.

Timber tools

Measuring Tools to take exact measurements.

Measuring tools are also essential when working with structural timber. Look for a measuring tape that is long enough to measure the full length of your timber, and a square that is accurate and easy to read. A laser level can also be useful for ensuring that your timber is level and plumb.

Timber tools

Safety Equipment to protect yourself.

Finally, it’s important to remember that working with structural timber can be dangerous if proper safety precautions aren’t taken.

Always wear appropriate safety gear, including a hard hat, safety glasses, and work gloves. Use a dust mask or respirator when cutting or sanding timber to protect yourself from sawdust and other debris.

Finishing Structural Pine Timber

One of the key characteristics of SA Pine is its density. It is a relatively lightweight wood that is easy to work with, making it a popular choice for construction and furniture-making. It also has a consistent texture and straight grain, which makes it easy to sand and finish.

SA Pine has a warm, light color with a subtle grain pattern. It is also known for its natural knots and blemishes, which add to its rustic charm. There are a few ways you can add some character such as:

Structural Timber

Using a Solvent-based Clear Sealant and tints for Structural Pine Timber.

For those who appreciate the natural appearance of pine wood, it’s best to opt for a clear sealant. This will enhance the wood’s natural look, and a solvent-based clear sealant, like Timberlife’s “Ultraseal,” “Ultradeck,” or “Khuni Sealer,” is recommended.

Timberlife is a great choice for its superior qualities, including a high sheen finish, water resistance, UV-resistant pigments, and quick-drying formula. Additionally, it’s fully compatible with untreated and CCA-treated pine wood.

If you prefer a different color for your pine wood. There are multiple tints available in different shades of brown namely: Mahogany / Walnut / Oregon / Teak / Dark Oak / Imbuia / Kiaat / Golden Brown.

Timber Treatments

Painting Structural Pine Timber.

Both treated and untreated structural pine can be painted. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the paint should be based on an appropriate primer.

Applying a primer before painting helps the paint to stick better and results in a smoother finish. Look for a primer that is specifically designed for use on wood, and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once the primer has dried, you can start painting your structural pine timber. Use a high-quality paintbrush or roller to apply the water-based paint evenly and smoothly, following the direction of the grain. It’s generally recommended to apply two or more coats of paint for optimal coverage and durability.

Finally, make sure to allow enough time for the paint to dry entirely before using or touching the timber. This will guarantee that the paint sets correctly and provides the most extensive protection and durability.
